Objects to proclamation congratulating peace vigil group

(by THOMAS J. RUSSO - October 30, 2008)

With the election of our new Township Council, I thought my "letter to the editor" writing days were over. The council meeting of Oct. 21 proclamation congratulating a peace vigil group for its "courageous stance" has offended and angered me.

Let me state right up front, I am not in favor of war, but at the same time, I am not in favor of council members presenting this type of a proclamation, when the young men and women of our great country are putting themselves in harm’s way to protect the very freedoms which allow such a group to conduct their weekly street-corner demonstrations. Montclair has more pressing issues than to waste time on this type of matter. This was just an unneeded political statement.

Bravo to Deputy Mayor Roger Terry and councilors Richard Murnick and Cary Africk for their administrative courage in not signing this wasteful proclamation.

I must confess, I come from a different generation, a generation united by common purpose, and common values, such as duty, honor, courage, service and love of family and country. I feel I am qualified to submit this letter.

As a 19-year-old sailor, I underwent a life-changing experience while serving with the U.S. Navy Sixth Fleet when we escorted a contingent of Marines off the shores of Lebanon on a peace-keeping mission without a shot being fired.

In reference to Mayor Jerry Fried’s quote, "proclamation was relatively seamless, with no objector coming to the speaker’s podium," consider this letter as a tax-paying Montclair objector. God bless America.

3 cheers for Mr. Russo. I could not agree more. I am no longer a Montclair resident, but was born and raised there and still read the paper online. I don't know what generation Mr Russo is but there are plenty of all generations that feel as he does. I am the mother of two young men in their 20s, one of whom served with the Marines in Iraq directly following 9/11, and our entire family, all generations included, feel as Mr. Russo does. What has happened to patriotism and honor not just in Montclair but in our nation as a whole? Again, 3 cheers to Mr. Russo for speaking out!

Thank you to Mayor Fried, Councillors Baskerville, Lewis and Weller for supporting the proclamation for NJ Peace Action's anti-war vigil. Standing on the corner of Church St and Bloomfield Avenue over the years has given my family with our neighbors, an experience of coming together as a community; taking an action to stand up for peace and against an Illegal War . A war waged by a fear mongering regime who would rather divide it's people in war than unite us in peace! Yes, for me this is political, as well as spiritual, and I on a daily basis appreciate this great country of ours, which allows me the freedom to speak up and take action against injustice and division. Thank you NJ Peace Action, for supporting my right to stand up and speak out! Scott Seale
