He was a custodian at Watchung Elementary School for many years and prior to that worked for Bynderian Carpet Co. Many Montclair residents knew him best as an umpire for various softball teams in the area.

Mr. Spain is survived by his wife, Mildred Spain, a former teacher and learning consultant for the Montclair school system; a stepdaughter, Sharron Miller; a stepson, Gregory R. Jackson; two grandchildren, Jaimie Finkel and Gregory C. Jackson; and his Spain family.
