‘Compost Give-Back’ at Edgemont Park on Oct. 26
(by JOSE GERMAN - October 23, 2008)
With October in its full glory, the beautiful colors are beginning to move from the treetops to the ground. It’s the perfect time to find out how you can put those nutrient-rich leaves to work in your yard through composting.
On Sunday, Oct. 26, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., the township is holding its annual "Compost Give-Back" at Edgemont Park, offering free compost to Montclair residents. Bring your own bags; you can take up to 36 gallons.
When you pick up your compost, you can also take advantage of the special discount offer of "Earth Machine" compost bins, normally sold at $85, for just $45. Gray Russell, Montclair’s environmental coordinator, will be there to share his expertise on backyard composting, showing how to turn fall’s bounty of leaves into rich fertilizer for next year’s lawn or garden.
The Montclair Backyard Habitat Project will also be on hand to offer tips on other ways to "green" your yard by reducing use of chemicals, saving water, planting native plants and landscaping to attract birds and butterflies. We will be accepting applications on the spot to certify yards as National Wildlife Federation (NWF) Backyard Habitats.
Certification is easy to achieve, and each new certified yard will bring Montclair a step closer to national recognition as a NWF Community Habitat.
