Return the benches
(by JOHN KANIECKI - October 23, 2008)
In front of the library were two lovely benches. Upon arriving one day they were removed. When I inquired about this, I was told they were being refurbished. Later on, I was told that they were moved as a security measure.
How could two benches that were bolted down to the ground pose any security risk?
The fact of the matter is that people who are homeless would use the benches to sit on and sleep.
The homeless population in Montclair is not a threat to our society. We should embrace them with compassion rather than ostracize them in fear.
With the economic times the way they are, you yourself may be joining their ranks, as millions did during the Great Depression.
The benches were a joy to all, homeless or not. Now there is an emptying spot representing a hole in our collective heart.
Let us return the benches immediately.
