MHS football’s ‘Celebration of Champions’
The Montclair High football team will commemorate its storied history during its "Celebration of Champions," a two-day event on Friday, Nov. 7, and Saturday, Nov. 8.
All former Mounties and Montclair High football fans are encouraged to attend the weekend’s events. The Mounties urge all those interested in attending to RSVP by Saturday.
On Nov. 7, the team will host a "Champions Reception," during which the 22 Mountie State championship teams will be honored.
On Nov. 8, before MHS’ 1 p.m. home game against Hackensack, a "Mountie Tailgate" will take place near the newly renovated Robert "Fuzzy" Furlong Field House. During halftime, the 22 championship teams will be honored again and State championship flags will be unveiled.
‘Your Kid and Sports’ program at Yogi Berra Museum Oct. 30
The Yogi Berra Museum & Learning Center will host the latest in its series of in-depth programs, "Your Kid and Sports: What Every Parent Should Know" on Thursday, Oct. 30, at 7:30 p.m. With a panel of accomplished coaches and athletes, the program will help parents measure their child’s athletic ceiling and delve into a myriad of youth and high school sports issues.
The panelists include Bruce Harper, former NY Jets standout and current president of Heroes & Cool Kids; Fred Hill, the longtime Rutgers baseball coach; Tara Rienecker, former UConn soccer player and current Montclair State University coordinator of development of student athletes; and Mike Sheppard Jr., Seton Hall Prep baseball coach.
The program moderator is John McCarthy, an award-winning teacher and coach and cofounder of the Yogi Berra Museum & Learning Center’s Coaching Institute.

Montclair YMCA Panther tryouts
The Montclair YMCA Panthers, a pair of boys travel basketball teams at the Y, will be holding tryouts today and tomorrow.
Teams are available at 12-and-under and 14-and-under. Twelve-and-under players must have been born on or after Sept. 1, 1996. Fourteen-and-under players must have been born on or after Sept. 1, 1994.
Tryouts for the 12-and-under team will take place today at 5:30 p.m. Tryouts for the 14-and-under team will take place tomorrow at 5:30 p.m. Both tryouts will occur at the YMCA, located on Park Street in Montclair.
Tryout packets are available at the Y and must be completed before attending tryouts. The fee once a player makes a team is $250. YMCA membership is required. For more information, call 973-744-3400.
Spring travel baseball tryouts for 8U, 9U
The Republic Records Yankees Baseball Club will be holding tryouts during the autumn and winter for the spring 2009 season of its AAU house league and travel teams.
For boys ages 6 through 9, the club fields two divisions, according to skill and age, for its house league. The Yankees will also field three travel teams: 8U, 8U (AA) and 9U. Tryouts will begin the week of Nov. 17 and continue during the weeks of Dec. 8 and Dec. 15. The final tryout will take place in 2009 during the week of Jan. 5. All interested players must attend one tryout.
