Time for a reality check

(by ROBERT S. COHEN - October 16, 2008)

When our new mayor says, "We pledge to have less of a tax increase than we had last time," and "Montclair is a unique community," I wonder what alternative universe he lives in.

We have to cut taxes, or hasn’t he seen what’s going on in the world. Yes … even the sacred school budget.

The only thing important about Montclair’s so-called uniqueness is how out-of-touch it has become regarding property taxes.

Yeah, it means making some tough decisions … maybe we’ll have to cut out that after-school program or new uniforms for the football team, or whatever, but it’s time to get real before we join those other "unique" communities that now find themselves bankrupt.
