Police: Four suspects beat, rob two men on Forest Street

(by Dan Prochilo - October 09, 2008)

Two men were attacked by a group of four robbers as they walked on Forest Street at about 8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 30, police said.

The victims, who were from Bloomfield and Summit, were walking south on Forest Street when the robbers approached and punched one of the men in the head, face and stomach as they reached into his pants pocket and took his wallet and about $100 cash, police said.

The other victim tried to get the assailants off him, but they then began striking him as well, according to authorities.

The man whose wallet was taken had swelling on the side of his face and a cut in his mouth after the attack, police said. The victim who intervened ended up with a large bump on his forehead and an abrasion on one knee. Their wounds were not life-threatening, according to authorities, and they declined medical treatment.

Shortly after, two men who fit the description of the attackers were spotted running in the area of Walnut and North Willow streets and were stopped by responding officers, police indicated.

Gabriel Osborne, 23, and Roderick Stewart, 23, both of Montclair, seemed nervous and the victims positively identified them as two of the suspects, police said.

After they were arrested and taken to Police Headquarters, Onord Stewart, 24, Roderick Stewart’s brother, arrived saying he had gotten a phone call from his younger brother, who said he had been taken into custody and needed to be bailed out, according to police. Investigators found the claim suspicious, since Roderick Stewart had not yet been permitted to make phone calls, authorities said. Shortly thereafter, the victims also identified Onord Stewart as one of the men who robbed them and he, too, was placed under arrest, investigators said.

All three men were charged with two counts of robbery. The fourth suspect was not located that night.

Using a K-9 unit, officers later found two wallets discarded on a lawn and in a driveway that were between the robbery and arrest locations, police said.
