Authorities: Woman struck in hit-and-run is seriously injured
(by Dan Prochilo - October 09, 2008)
The Vehicular Homicide Unit of the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office was called to investigate a hit-and-run accident last week on Bloomfield Avenue that sent a 23-year-old pedestrian to the hospital.
Newark resident Tasha Thomas was crossing Bloomfield Avenue at Midland Avenue at about 9:24 p.m. last Wednesday, Oct. 1, when she was hit by a Ford Explorer driven by an allegedly drunken woman, said Prosecutor’s Office Spokesman Paul Loriquet.
Thomas was taken to University Hospital in Newark with serious injuries, but as of late last week, she was listed in stable condition. Loriquet was unsure which areas of the victim’s body had been injured in the crash.
Witnesses described the suspect’s vehicle as a Ford Explorer driven by a woman, and Montclair police officers quickly spotted an SUV matching the description on North Fullerton Avenue, Loriquet said.
The driver, Jessica Toledo, 32, of Nutley, was given summonses for leaving the scene of an accident and driving while intoxicated, Loriquet said.
The Montclair Police Department released no additional details, such as the direction Toledo was driving in, the extent of the damage to her SUV, and whether the victim was in the crosswalk when she was hit.
Sgt. Dan Pronti of MPD’s Traffic Bureau has said that the crosswalk spanning Bloomfield Avenue at Midland Avenue is "the worst" crosswalk in Montclair in terms of drivers failing to yield to pedestrians. During a traffic-safety campaign held this past summer, it was one of seven intersections in Montclair where undercover detectives posing as pedestrians tried to cross, and those motorists who didn’t stop for them were pulled over and ticketed.
