Craig Coleman Fitzpatrick


Craig Coleman Fitzpatrick, 94, of Montclair, died on Wednesday, Oct. 1.

Mr. Fitzpatrick was born in Hollis, N.Y., son of Irving Fitzpatrick and Louise Coleman. He was a 90-year resident of Montclair, and a 90-year member of St. James Episcopal Church.

He sang in St. James’ boys choir, and spent summers at Camp Dudley in Westport, N.Y. He attended Montclair High School and graduated from Mercersburg Academy in 1931 and Princeton University in 1935.

In 1942, Mr. Fitzpatrick enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He sailed to Mermansk, Russia, carrying Allied arms. He crossed the Arctic Circle. He also transported troops and supplies from North Africa to southern Europe in the Mediterranean. He was on his way to the South Pacific when Japan surrendered.

He spent his career importing spices through his family’s business, Knickerbocker Mills. He was a member of the Montclair Athletic Club, and a member of the Montclair Golf Club for over 50 years.

Mr. Fitzpatrick married Frances Pughe Maginn at St. James in 1957. He enjoyed traveling and visited five continents, taking over 2,000 photographs from the Sphinx to Machu Picchu.

He is survived by his daughter, Harriet Louise of Hoboken; his son, Craig Coleman Jr. of Cedar Grove; his stepson, Bill Maginn of Clifton Park, N.Y.; and two granddaughters.

Private services were held on Oct. 7. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. James Memorial Fund, 581 Valley Road, Montclair, NJ 07043, or Princeton University, Class of 1935 Scholarships, P.O. Box 5357, Princeton, NJ 08543-5357.
