Augustus Hager Bryant III
Augustus Hager Bryant III, 70, of Vero Beach, Fla., died on Friday, Sept. 12.
Mr. Bryant was born and raised in Montclair, son of A. Hager Bryant Jr. and Margaret Patrick Bryant. He graduated from The Hill School in Pottstown, Pa., and earned a B.S. in business administration at Lehigh University in 1961. Immediately following graduation, he served as a reservist in the U.S. Army in Fort Dix. Mr. Bryant worked on Wall Street as a securities analyst through most of the 1960s and ’70s while raising his family and residing in Montclair. In 1979, he joined Transco Energy Co. in Houston, Texas, as treasurer.
Mr. Bryant enjoyed tennis and met many of his friends playing tennis. He met his wife on the tennis court at The Montclair Golf Club, enjoyed summer tennis at The Nantucket Yacht Club, and schooled his daughter into a nationally ranked college player. In 2002, Mr. Bryant and his wife moved from Houston to Vero Beach, Fla., and joined the tennis community at Sea Oaks.
For the last ten years, Mr. Bryant served as a USTA umpire, most recently refereeing matches throughout Central Florida. He was also an active member of the Sebastian area Meals on Wheels, Indian River Habitat for Humanity and served as treasurer of the AIDS Research and Treatment Center of the Treasure Coast in Fort Pierce, Fla.
Mr. Bryant is survived by his wife of 45 years, Joan Wallace Bryant; two children, Mark Hager Bryant of Greenwich, Conn., and Wendy Bryant Fasciano of Swampscott, Mass., his sister, Helen Bryant Perry of Vero Beach, Fla., and Tolland, Mass.; and four grandchildren, Ruffin, Phelan, Tory and Chase.
A celebration of Mr. Bryant’s life will be announced at a later date.
