Three years make a vast difference
(by ROLAND STRATEN - July 24, 2008)
The last time I wrote a letter to the editor, it was to lambaste the Montclair 4th of July Parade, comparing it with the Bristol, R.I., parade. What a difference three years make.
Gone from this year’s parade were the obnoxious repetitive speakers advocating a particular agenda using handheld loudspeakers. Yes, people were exercising their free speech rights, but it was done in a way that brought back memories of earlier parades. The parade organizers deserve our thanks for a job well done, balancing the needs and desires of the various groups.
It is possible that I was a bit biased since I marched in the parade this year. I must admit, I signed up with some trepidation since Montclair has not been the most receptive town to someone running for Congress as a Republican. But my fears were unwarranted.
The parade start was extremely well organized and everyone along the parade route was courteous and pleasant. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Thank you, Montclair.
