Police briefs, July 10 to 17

(by Dan Prochilo - July 17, 2008)

Man is severely beaten and then dumped in empty lot

After he was beaten so badly that his sinuses and nasal bones were fractured and he wavered in and out of consciousness, a Montclair man was hoisted by his attackers and thrown into a vacant Mission Street lot between 10 p.m. on Friday, July 11, and 4 a.m. the following morning.

Police went to Mountainside Hospital after receiving a call about a beating victim being treated there. They found the man had facial injuries and bruises to his back and ribs.

The man told investigators he had left a friend’s house at 10 the night before and he was walking north on Mission Street when he saw a group of four men, between 18 and 20 years old, standing on the street. When he walked past the group, he was punched in the head from behind and, once he was down, he was punched and kicked by all four men.

After the pummeling, one of the suspects went through the victim’s pockets and took his date book, a set of keys, a Costa Rican driver’s license and $1.

Then the attackers picked up the victim and threw him into an empty lot about 200 feet north of where the beating took place. The man regained consciousness at 4 a.m. and two friends brought him to the hospital.

Theft of Services

A man from East Orange who walked out of The Office Bar & Grill on Bloomfield Avenue without paying for his two beers and plate of fries was tackled by a bar employee while fleeing and arrested by police, according to authorities.

Police responding to a report of a disturbance at the establishment at about midnight Friday, July 11, saw Scott Hatchett, 48, being chased east down Bloomfield Avenue by bar workers, one of whom took Hatchett to the ground, according to police.

The suspect’s pursuers said they had seen Hatchett at the bar twice before, and both times he left without paying, police said. Hatchett was arrested and charged with theft of services, authorities said. Police also learned that he had two warrants for a total of $400, officials said. The management of The Office banned Hatchett from ever going there again, according to police.

Soliciting without a permit

Nurriddiyn Umar, 50, of Montclair, was arrested on charges that he was selling tea oils and incense out of a duffel bag on the street without a permit from the township, police said.

An officer spotted Umar on Friday, July 11, at 8:14 p.m. at the corner of Bloomfield and Gates avenues, sitting on the steps to a building, according to police. The officer noticed Umar was selling goods to passersby out of the large bag he had with him, and asked him if he had a permit, authorities said. Umar said he did not have one, but that he "always sits out here," police indicated.

The officer ran a records check on Umar and found he had more than $5,500 in criminal and traffic warrants, according to police.

He was placed under arrest and searched, and officers found he was carrying a double-edged black folding knife he said was for self-defense, police said. Umar was charged with unlawful possession of a weapon and soliciting without a permit.

Thief’s blood found inside car

Police said a thief left blood on one of the seats of a car that the suspect broke into and burglarized sometime between 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. Wednesday, July 9.

The thief shattered the front driver’s side window to a 1996 Mazda Millenia parked in the lot between South Fullerton Avenue and Seymour Street, and stole a dashboard-mounted combination DVD and CD player and radio. A detective responded to swab samples from the blood spots the suspect left on one of the seats.
