MUSC to launch soccer academy
The Montclair United Soccer Club (MUSC) will launch the U8 Montclair United Soccer Academy (MUSA) in the autumn. The purpose of the MUSA is to provide developing players with an advanced-training approach in an environment enjoyable for all participants, as well as an appropriate format for players (and parents). The program will inspire young players to learn and develop a passion for soccer through a positive-reward system.
MUSA is taking the place of MUSC’s U8 travel teams. There is no travel to other towns for play in the MUSA, and three sessions will be held per week in Montclair. To be eligible for the MUSA, children must have been born between Aug. 1, 2000, and July 31, 2001.
One tryout remains; players must attend at least one tryout to be eligible. The final tryout will take place in late August or early September at a time and date to be determined and posted on the MUSC Web site: www.montclairsoccer.com.
Questions about the MUSA can be directed to Rick Lansing at rlans@yahoo.com or 973-207-5511.
Yogi Museum baseball/softball camp offered
The Yogi Berra Museum & Learning Center will be providing a fun and unique learning opportunity for kids ages 8 through 12 this summer with a one-week baseball and softball camp (Aug. 4 through 8).
Skills, drills and pickup games on the adjoining Montclair State University playing fields will be combined with a series of workshops on sportsmanship and healthy life choices at the museum.
Now in its seventh year, one of the camp’s annual highlights is a session with baseball legend and museum namesake, Yogi Berra. Throughout the week, campers will also receive instruction from collegiate players as well as a guest professional player.
Enrollment for the baseball and softball camp is on a first-come, first-serve basis. The camps run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day. Lunch is provided daily; the fee for the camp is $355. Parents and caregivers can call the museum for an application or pick up a form at the museum during regular visitor hours. A limited number of scholarships are available. For more info, call the museum at 973-655-2378.
All training and coaching at the camps will be under the direction of Paul Reddick of the New Jersey Baseball Academy.
Pop Warner football, cheering registration
Registration is ongoing for Pop Warner football and cheerleading at Montclair Recreation, 205 Claremont Ave.
Montclair Recreation is sponsoring Pop Warner tackle football and cheerleading for Montclair children ages 5 through 14. The main objective is to assist in children’s educational and personal development by offering an after-school-tutoring program at the Tutoring Club of Montclair in addition to physical growth through football.
Participation in North Jersey Pop Warner (NJPW) allows the MRCA to put an emphasis on education by requiring participants to maintain a certain GPA. At the end of the season, NJPW will hold an awards banquet to recognize the scholar-athletes from each cheer/football program throughout the league.
The 2008 season will kick off on Saturday, Aug. 23, with the Jr. Pee Wee Division Cheer Football Jamboree at Paul Robeson Field in East Orange.
All other Montclair divisions will begin their regular season on Sunday, Aug. 24, at Woodman Field. The season ends Oct. 12.
Each team will participate in a weight-and-age-restricted league. Information on weights for each age group is available by calling the MRCA at 973-509-4915.
The Montclair Bulldog cheerleaders will cheer at all home and away games throughout the season. Cheerleaders will also have the opportunity to participate in the NJPW Cheer Competition.
Montclair Recreation will provide helmets, shoulder pads, jerseys and mouthpieces to football participants. Players are to use their own white football pants with pads, an athletic supporter and cleats. For cheerleading, Montclair Recreation will provide pompoms and a uniform. Cheerleaders are to use their own cheerleading shoes. The fee for football is $75; cheerleading is $60.
Montclair Recreation will also continue its In-Town Flag Football League for boys and girls ages 6 through 9. Games and practices are held Monday through Friday at Kaveny Field. Jerseys and mouthpieces are provided by Montclair Recreation, and the fee is $50. Boys ages 7 through 9 have the option of playing flag or tackle, but cannot play both.
Jackals PA Announcer Fantasy Experience

Participants will have an opportunity to announce their favorite lineup over the stadium PA system, receive a photo at the microphone and a ticket to a Jackals game. The fee is $25. For an additional $10, participants will receive a CD of their performance.
